Blessed are the meek
The meek, Jesus promised, will inherit the earth.
The word used in this blessing means “land,”
“ground,” even “dirt.” It spoke of blessings for this
life as well as the next.
Many listening to Jesus were destitute and hungry.
They owned little and inherited less. They longed for
a simple piece of land — a fertile patch of earth to
sustain them and their families. Like many who are
poor today, they were regarded as powerless.
In speaking to them, Jesus affirmed the psalmist’s vision: “The meek will inherit the land and enjoy great
peace” (Psalm 37:11).
As followers of Jesus, we use what He has given us to empower the powerless. We dream of a world where the
meek and the poor receive the inheritance God has for them.
